Today was the most exciting day of my fly fishing for carp life. If only friend Donny Carter could have been there to watch the event unfold. For those of you that don't know Donny... he's the best dry fly fisherman I know and his favorite pattern is the Elk Hair Caddis.
Finding six carp sipping blossoms off the surface, I tie on a size 12 Elk Hair. Only one carp is on the near side where I am and the fly lands about eight inches above his position. He comes up on the fly just like a sipping trout would. The hook-set was easy because it came in a moment of perfect clarity. It was a beautiful experience and my first carp on a dry fly pattern. Charlie took a couple late last season with his Thistle Missile, but, somehow I've kept thinking an Elk Hair might just work. The second carp I cast too also took the Elk Hair, but, in my excitement I tried to set too early.

Good job on those fish..With all do respect and I say this with only the best intentions, get your self a good rubberized net for handling your fish. Carp or any other fish won't fare well after rolling in the dirt. Again, not meant as a put down toward you in anyway.

No offense taken David. If I was equipped better to take pictures I'd never take these creatures out of the water. And... if the day comes I think I am causing fish irreparable harm... I'll quit fishing.
Barry - I caught my first carp on the Blue last week and immediately thought of your carp adventures. I'm so mad that I didn't think to take a picture. I was fishing a #16 Hare's Ear at a depth of about five and half feet with a 5-wt rod. He fought hard and was a beautiful gold color. I estimate he was about 18" long and around six pounds. It's got me totally understanding your facination and seriously considering carp hunting. Thanks,

That is just too cool Russell. Be careful, carpin by fly is terribly addictive. Congratulations!!!
That's Pretty cool Barry. We don't get many opportunities to get them on top here in CO beyond a seasonal seed hatch and algea blooms. I am jealous.
